You open the cabinet door under your kitchen sink to get the dish soap out and you notice that there’s water on top of the bottle as well as the cabinet floor.

You run your hand along the drain pipe under the kitchen sink and it’s wet! So, now what?

Why Is My Drain Pipe Leaking?

Your kitchen drain pipe normally has three slip nuts with washers in them. Many of us put alot of items under the kitchen sink, some of us even hang items from the drain pipe. These items can all easily dislodge the slip nuts, making them lose and causing a leak.

This is the most common reason for a leak in your kitchen sink drain pipe.

How To Fix A Leaky Sink Drain Pipe

You will need to unscrew these slip nuts and replace the washers (which are probably the cause for the leaks). If this does not fix the problem – you may have to replace the entire assembly of pipes. The video below will show you how to do this fairly simple procedure.

Before you begin working on the drain pipe under your sink we recommend that you first remove everything from under the sink and then turn the water off, not just the water from the faucet but the water to the faucet.

How Do I Turn The Water Off Under My Kitchen Sink?

Follow these easy steps…

  • You may need to use a lamp or a flashlight to illuminate the area under the kitchen sink.
  • You should see two faucet valves on the wall of the back of the cabinet.
  • Simply turn each one of them clockwise to turn them off.
  • After you are finished – remember to turn these valves back on by turning them counter clockwise.

If you attempted to fix the leaky drain pipe problem with no success – we recommend you contact a professional plumber to assess and correct the problem.
