{"id":592,"date":"2023-11-27T22:51:28","date_gmt":"2023-11-28T03:51:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.atlantisplumbing.com\/articles\/?p=592"},"modified":"2024-01-01T10:16:45","modified_gmt":"2024-01-01T15:16:45","slug":"what-do-i-do-if-my-sewer-backs-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.atlantisplumbing.com\/articles\/what-do-i-do-if-my-sewer-backs-up\/","title":{"rendered":"What Do I Do If My Sewer Backs Up?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>There are some plumbing issues that can be delayed for a little while but if you have problems with your sewer line &#8211; that&#8217;s an issue that needs to get fixed right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what can you do if your sewer backs up?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For a possible clog, try using a plunger on your sink and\/or toilets to clear it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have waste coming into your home, turn off the main water source<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then turn off your electricity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open your windows for ventilation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call a professional plumber<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, if you are up to the task of cleaning out any areas of your home that were affected by the waste water coming you you will need to&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Put on safety gear (rubber gloves, face mask, goggles, boots)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a shop vacuum to remove liquids and solids in your flooded areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discard all absorbent material that was affected<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disinfect walls and floors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Otherwise, you can call in a company to professionally clean the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These steps are the very basic things that you need to do if your sewer backs up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, you will just have to deal with a clog in your drain pipe or your toilet and a plunger will do the trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If not, we strongly recommend you call a professional plumber to assess the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If on the other hand you have a severe sewer back up and waste is coming into your home, the immediate things to do are to turn off your water and electricity and open your windows for ventilation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you can call in a professional plumber to begin the process of fixing the problem(s) that caused the backup in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cleaning out the room(s) that were affected by the waste water is up to you. It&#8217;s a big and messy job and does require specific equipment such as&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heavy duty rubber gloves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A face mask<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Goggles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rubber boots that are higher than the area you are cleaning out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wet \/ Dry Shop Vacuum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bleach and disinfectants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After the area has been cleaned &#8211; you will also have to check for mold and have any drywall, molding, flooring, etc. inspected for possible need of repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does It Mean When Your Sewer Backs Up?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are multiple reasons why a sewer line would back up including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a buildup of grease in your sewer lines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tree roots have invaded your pipes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clogs caused by objects or debris<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>broken pipes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>severe weather causing flooding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>problems with the city sewer pipes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Signs Of A Sewage Backup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Possible signs that you have a clog or problem with your sewer line include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gurgling sounds from your drains or toilets.<br>Water backing up out of drains or toilets.<br>Water pooling around drains or toilets.<br>Smell of raw sewage coming from your drains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips On How To Prevent A Sewage Backup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Clean out your sewer lines every 18 &#8211; 22 months. It&#8217;s less costly to clean it out before it gets clogged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Avoid pouring grease down your drain pipes (and garbage disposals). Grease can harden and cause a clog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Avoid flushing anything down your toilet with the exception of toilet paper. This includes flushable wipes which are not safe to flush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Check for cracks in your basement \/ foundation. We recommend waterproofing your crawlspace \/ basement for more protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. If you don&#8217;t yet have a sump pump installed in your basement &#8211; we do recommend putting one in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. Get a professional assessment from a plumber on the current condition of your sewer pipes. If they are old pipes, you may want to consider switching them to PVC piping.
