Of course, the answer depends on the problem(s) that the water heater is presenting and the age of the unit. If your water heater is between 6 and 12 years old (or older) you may actually be better off getting a new on instead of repairing the old one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend that you use the 50% rule. Which states that if a repair ends up costing more than 50% of what it would cost for a new product, then consider replacing it versus repairing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Most Common Water Heater Problems That Can Be Fixed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the most common issues that would require repair work on your water heater:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A broken or sticky valve<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The burner or heating element breaks down<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Circuit breaker trips (if it&#8217;s an electric water heater)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pilot light flickers or goes out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thermostat breaks down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Call your plumber to come in and assess the situation with your water heater and he\/she will be able to advise you if the problem can be fixed or if it&#8217;s simply wiser to get a new unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can You Patch A Hole In A Hot Water Heater?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Water may be leaking through a pinhole or several of them and you may want to simply try to patch them. Technically, this can be done but it&#8217;s not recommended. The metal that most hot water heater tanks are made of is very thin and pin holes in your unit are a very good indication that the tank is rusting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, patching a hole or two will only solve the problem temporarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend that as soon as you notice a leak from your water heater to contact your plumber as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is It Dangerous To Have A Leaking Water Heater?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your water heater is leaking &#8211; you may decide that you want to wait to get it fixed. But is that a wise decision? We suggest that is not and here is why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The water damage could cost you more if it affects your walls, floors, furniture, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A faulty pressure relief valve could cause the unit to explode<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faulty water heaters could emit carbon monoxide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are multiple reasons why your water heater may be leaking &#8211; any of these reasons may simply be a symptom of a much larger problem. Don&#8217;t wait to get that unit fixed. If it&#8217;s past it&#8217;s prime it may not be under warranty any longer and in this case &#8211; it may be wiser to purchase a new unit. Even if the cost to repair it is not very high. Even though there are not many moving parts that could break down, the fact is that the unit will be getting older and older &#8211; it&#8217;s inevitable that something else will break down.
