Of course &#8211; it can happen &#8211; we&#8217;re just saying it&#8217;s not the most common reason for sewer pipes to get clogged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What IS the most common cause is when tree roots (or other plant roots) find a crack in the pipe and make their way in. It&#8217;s very normal for plant roots to be attracted to the moisture and the warmer temperature in and around these pipes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other reasons that would cause a sewer line clog resulting in a backup are&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Building foundation defects could affect the sewer line depending on where the sewer line is located.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>City sewer pipes could become clogged due to no fault of your home.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantisplumbing.com\/articles\/how-to-fix-sewer-drain-clogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here for a listing of local water and sewer departments<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severe weather causing flooding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Broken pipes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tell Tale Signs Of A Sewer Line Clog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some signs that you can look for that will let you know that yes, you may certainly have a clog in your sewer line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All or multiple drains are backing up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water in all or multiple drains is going down slowly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All or multiple toilets are backing up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signs of sewage or standing water in or near your sewer cleanout<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water backs up in the shower and\/or bathtub when the toilet flushes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Toilet doesn&#8217;t flush or it gurgles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you notice any of these signs in your home &#8211; chances are fairly high that you have a clog in your sewer line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevention Tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some helpful tips on how you can work towards preventing sewer backups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clean out your sewer lines every&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantisplumbing.com\/articles\/how-often-should-you-clean-out-sewer-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">18 &#8211; 22 months<\/a>. It&#8217;s less costly to clean it out before it gets clogged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid pouring grease down your drain pipes (and garbage disposals). Grease can harden and cause a clog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid flushing anything down your toilet with the exception of toilet paper. This includes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantisplumbing.com\/articles\/are-flushable-wipes-really-safe-to-flush\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flushable wipes<\/a>&nbsp;which are not safe to flush.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check for cracks in your basement \/ foundation. We recommend waterproofing your crawlspace \/ basement for more protection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you don&#8217;t yet have a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantisplumbing.com\/articles\/do-i-need-a-sump-pump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sump pump<\/a>&nbsp;installed in your basement &#8211; we do recommend putting one in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get a professional assessment from a plumber on the current condition of your sewer pipes.
